Could Your Child Be Gifted? What You Might Notice During Play

Every child develops differently.

Some little ones love running, climbing and exploring the world with their whole body. Others are happiest sitting quietly, completely absorbed in a puzzle or figuring out how something works.

If you've ever watched your child become completely engrossed in their Wondertivity Busy Book and thought...

"Wow... I didn't expect them to figure that out so quickly."

...you might have wondered whether they're showing signs of advanced learning.

A busy book can't tell you whether your child is gifted. Giftedness is much more complex than completing activities quickly. However, screen-free play provides a wonderful opportunity to observe how your child thinks, learns and solves problems.

Here are some behaviours you may notice while your child is playing.

1. They Master New Activities Almost Instantly

Most children need repetition before mastering a new skill.

Children with advanced learning abilities often seem to understand an activity after watching it just once.

You might notice they:

  • Complete a page after a quick demonstration.
  • Rarely need help after the first attempt.
  • Remember exactly how to do it weeks later.

For example, they may work out how the buckles, zips or threading pages function without any prompting.

2. They Create Their Own Challenges

Gifted children often aren't satisfied with simply completing an activity.

Instead, they'll invent new ways to play.

For example, they might:

  • Sort colours in different patterns.
  • Count backwards instead of forwards.
  • Create stories using the felt characters.
  • Turn matching activities into memory games.
  • Pretend to be the teacher and ask you questions instead.

Rather than following instructions exactly, they expand on them.

3. They Have Incredible Attention Spans

While many toddlers move quickly between toys, some children become deeply absorbed in one activity.

You may notice your child:

  • Plays independently for extended periods.
  • Doesn't notice distractions around them.
  • Wants to finish every page before moving on.
  • Returns to the same activity repeatedly to improve it.

This intense focus—especially on something they genuinely enjoy—is often seen in highly curious learners.

4. They Ask "Why?" About Everything

Some children don't just want to know the answer.

They want to know why the answer is correct.

While completing activities, they may ask:

  • "Why does this animal live there?"
  • "Why is this number bigger?"
  • "Why does this shape fit but that one doesn't?"
  • "Why can't I put this here instead?"

These questions show curiosity and a desire to understand concepts rather than simply memorising them.

5. They Spot Patterns Adults Miss

Pattern recognition is a common strength in many gifted children.

While playing, they might notice:

  • Repeating colour sequences.
  • Symmetry.
  • Relationships between numbers.
  • Alphabet patterns.
  • Similarities between different activities.

They often connect ideas much earlier than expected for their age.

6. They Have an Amazing Memory

Does your child remember where every felt piece belongs—even after weeks of not playing with the book?

Some children can:

  • Recall entire activity sequences.
  • Remember instructions after hearing them once.
  • Recognise letters, colours or numbers long after being introduced.

Strong memory is often one of the earliest signs parents notice.

7. They Love Solving Problems

Rather than asking for help immediately, they persist.

If a piece doesn't fit, they'll rotate it.

If a buckle is tricky, they'll keep experimenting.

If something doesn't work, they try another strategy.

Instead of becoming frustrated quickly, they seem motivated by the challenge itself.

8. They Pretend They're the Teacher

One of the biggest clues that learning has "clicked" is when children start teaching someone else.

You might hear them saying:

  • "No, this goes here."
  • "Now you do this one."
  • "Let's count together."
  • "Can you find the red fish?"

Teaching reinforces understanding and often shows they've moved beyond simply copying.

9. They Make Unexpected Connections

Gifted children often link ideas together in surprising ways.

While playing with different pages they may say things like:

  • "Three flowers and three fish are the same number."
  • "The triangle looks like the roof of our house."
  • "The lion starts with the same letter as Lucy."

Making these connections is a sign they're building a deeper understanding of the world around them.

10. They Never Seem to Run Out of Questions

Sometimes the activity becomes less interesting than the conversation it sparks.

A single page can lead to dozens of questions.

"What would happen if...?"

"Can animals really do that?"

"Why is the moon out during the day?"

Curiosity is one of the greatest predictors of lifelong learning.

Remember: Every Child Develops at Their Own Pace

It's important to remember that giftedness isn't measured by how early a child learns the alphabet or how quickly they finish a puzzle.

Many gifted children develop unevenly. They may be years ahead academically while developing socially or emotionally at the same pace as their peers.

Likewise, children who don't display these behaviours can still become incredibly successful learners.

Every child has unique strengths, interests and ways of understanding the world.

Why Open-Ended Play Matters

One of the reasons parents love Wondertivity Busy Books is that they don't simply entertain—they reveal how children think.

As your child plays, you'll naturally observe:

  • How they solve problems.
  • How long they stay engaged.
  • Whether they enjoy challenge.
  • What sparks their curiosity.
  • Which skills they're ready to explore next.

These moments give you valuable insight into your child's learning style while creating meaningful, screen-free time together.

Whether your little one is showing early signs of giftedness, building confidence through repetition or simply enjoying imaginative play, every page of a Wondertivity Busy Book encourages curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of learning.

After all, the goal isn't to raise the smartest child in the room—it's to nurture a child who loves discovering, asking questions and exploring the world around them.
